Summer Outings & Events 2017

Waterford Archaeological & Historical Society
SUMMER OUTINGS & EVENTS 2017

Sunday 11th June – Sunday fieldtrip: Lismore Heritage Centre
Visit Lismore Heritage Centre and take a guided tour of Lismore heritage town, including the historic St Carthage’s Cathedral and the recently exposed Victorian ice-houses.
Meet at the Lismore Heritage Centre at 14:30.

Thursday 22nd June – Evening fieldtrip: The Coastguard in Tramore
Visit to the former H.M. Coastguard Station and a guided walk with Mr. James Doherty around locations associated with the Coastguard in Tramore. This trip is a follow up to a talk given to the society by Mr Doherty in April which highlighted some of the key events in the organisation’s history.
Meet at the Coastguard Cultural Centre, Tramore at 7pm.

Sunday 16th July – Summer outing: The Heart of Medieval Limerick and the Hunt Museums of Treasures
Guided tours of King John’s Castle and the Hunt Museum and other features of historical interest in Limerick’s historic core.
Depart at 08:30am, return at 9pm. Cost 55 euro.

Thursday 10th August – Evening fieldtrip: Waterford’s medieval walls
A guided tour of some well-known and less well-known sections of Waterford’s late medieval walls.
Meet at the Applemarket at 7pm.

Thursday 24th August – Evening Event: People Who Made Waterford Famous
The Society’s contribution to Heritage Week 2017. Join members of Waterford Archaeological & Historical Society who will present a miscellany of short talks about people who put Waterford on the map.
The Tapestry Room, Granville Hotel, Meagher’s Quay, Waterford at 7pm. Free event.

SUNDAY AND THURSDAY EVENING FIELDTRIPS ARE FREE TO MEMBERS.

Friday 27th January
        Speaker: Mr Glascott Symes.
Topic: Sir John Keane and Cappoquin House in time of war and revolution.
This lecture will cover Sir John Keane’s management of the Cappoquin estate through his service in both the Boer War and World War 1, returning home for the War of Independence. He went on to serve in the first Senate of the Free State only to have his home destroyed in the Civil War. However he personally oversaw the rebuilding of the house.

Friday 24th February
        Speaker: Mr Liam Murphy.
Topic: The life of Dr. Thomas Hussey (1746-1803), Bishop of Waterford and Lismore and first President of Maynooth.


Friday 31st March  
        Speaker: Mr Sean Murphy.
Topic: Stories of The Great War, from mid County Waterford.

Friday 7th April Annual General Meeting – Details beforehand.

Friday 28th April  
        Speaker: Mr James Doherty.
Topic: The Forgotten Force. 
This lecture will look at H.M. Coastguard in pre-independence Ireland. Regulations, Roles and Responsibilities.
It is hoped that this lecture will be a precursor to a summer outing later in the year. The summer outing will consist of a guided walk in the Tramore area visiting the coastguard station and associated cottages and highlighting some of the key events in this organisations history.

Friday 26th May  
         Speaker: Mr Julian Walton.
Topic: The Curraghmore of ‘Squint Eye George’, first Marquess of Waterford, 1736 to 1800.

Friday 29th January                           Speaker: Monsignor Michael Olden.

Topic: Dr. Richard A Sheehan 1845 – 1915.
Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, and founder of
The Waterford and South East of Ireland Archaeological Society.

Friday 26th February                                    Speaker: Dr. Elizabeth Shee Twohig, UCC.

Topic: “Houses of the Dead: the megalithic tombs of East Waterford”
This lecture will look at the various types of “dolmens” (megalithic tombs) in the area and discuss their use and the people who built them.

Friday 1st April                                   Speaker: Mr. James Doherty

Topic: The Two Military Barracks in Waterford.
James Doherty will examine the history behind the two military barracks in Waterford City and will provide an insight into why they were built, what garrison life was like and the factors that led to the decline and almost complete disappearance of what was once a impressive military complex in the heart of Waterford City.

Friday 29th April                                Speaker: Dr. Pat McCarthy.

Topic: Waterford men in The 1916 Rising.
This lecture will mark the centenary of The 1916 Rising.

Friday 27nd May                                Speaker: Mr. Kieran Cronin.

Topic: Aquila Non Captat Muscas: a voyage of discovery of the William Graves and Sons Shipping Company papers at WIT Libraries.
This lecture provides an insight into the historical documents of the William Graves and Sons Shipping Company Papers which WIT Libraries are custodians of since May 2015. The company’s origins date back to 1811 and are most famously known for commissioning the building of the Dunbrody ship (1840-1845). At its height the company had offices in New Ross, Waterford, Liverpool and Savannah, Georgia amongst others. This collection of circa 1400 historical documents includes ledgers, letters, legal documents, prospectuses, maps etc. which when brought together give a greater understanding of the multifaceted international business operations of the company in the 19th century.

Friday 30th January      Speaker: Ms Anne-Marie Ryan.
                                      Topic: 16 Dead Men, The Easter Rising Executions.
                                      This lecture will look at the lives of the executed leaders of the 1916 rising.

Friday 27th February    Speaker: Mr Sonny Condon
                                      Topic: The SS Portláirge
                                      A look back over the 75 years’ service of The SS Portláirge to the port of Waterford.

Friday 27th March        Speaker: Mr Cian Manning.
                                      Topic: A Gentle Borough? – A History of the MP’s of Waterford City, 1801 - 1922
                                      This lecture will take a look at some of the notable figures and characters to have represented Waterford City at Westminster.

Thursday 9th April       Annual General Meeting – Details beforehand.

Friday 24th April           Speaker: Mr David Robson.
                                      Topic: The making of ‘Barry Lyndon’
                                      A look back at the making of the film Barry Lyndon directed by the maverick Stanley Kubrick and starring Ryan O’Neal, when Hollywood came to Waterford.

Friday 22nd May           Speaker: Mr Brian Havel.
                                      Topic: The life of Miroslav Havel, the first employee and chief designer of Waterford Crystal.

AUTUMN 2014 LECTURES




Friday 26th September 

                 Speaker: Dr Pat McCarthy

                  Topic: 1914: Waterford and the coming of war - this lecture will look at Waterford in 1914 with the coming of the First World War.


Friday 31st October 

               Speaker: Dr Nora White

               Topic: Ogham Stones of County Waterford - This lecture will  include an update on recent conservation work and 3D scanning of the ogham stones. It is hoped that this lecture will be precursor to a summer outing in 2015 to Seskinan medieval church, where some of the local ogham stones were built into the fabric of the church by the medieval builders. 

Friday 28th November

             Speaker: Mr Julian Walton   

             Topic: 1914, Sleepwalking into war.  This lecture will coincide with the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

 Guided tour of recent excavation sites in Cathedral Square with Archaeologist Ms Orla Scully. Meet in Cathedral Square at 7.00pm.

Sunday 8th June Coach Trip to visit the Forts of Cork Harbour with guide Dr. Pat McCarthy.

Including boat trip to Spike Island and guided tour.
Guided tour of Camden Fort.
4 course meal in Old Imperial Hotel, Youghal on homeward journey.

 Thursday 26th June Tooreen Bronze Age Sites.

Guided tour of the Tooreen Bronze Age sites with guide Mr. Michael Desmond. Meet in the Community Centre car park, Ballymacarberry at 7.00pm

Sunday 13th July Our Mining Heritage

Visit to Bonmahon copper coast. Meet at the Copper Coast Geopark Centre, Bonmahon (located in the old Church of Ireland Church) at 3pm. Visit will include tour of the centre including a short film, followed by a guided tour of the Tankerdstown site.


Thursday 31st July Dunbrody Abbey: Guided tour of Dunbrody Abbey and Visitor Centre.

The centre is approx. 2 miles from the Passage East car ferry, drive from Ballyhack to Arthurstown and follow the R733 road to New Ross, or if travelling from New Ross, follow the R733 road to Arthurstown. Meet at the centre car park at 7.00pm.

August – Heritage Week We are hoping to arrange a final Thursday evening outing to coincide with Heritage Week 2014 (23rd to 31st August). Details to be confirmed closer to the date.

Topic: Outstanding Waterford Churchmen of the 19th Century

Friday 5th April Speaker: Mr David Toms 
Topic: Urbs Intacta Manet? The Development of Rugby and Soccer in Waterford 1877-1937
This lecture will outline the development of both rugby and soccer in Waterford from 1877 until just before the Second World War, asking the question whether Waterford was taken by a love of these sports, or whether as the city's motto goes it remained the unconquered city.

Topic: The Battle of Le Pilly
Between the 19th & 20th October 1914, 300 men from the south east of Ireland lost their lives, at least 36 of them came from Waterford City and County. 


We are very honoured that Waterford was chosen as the venue for the 2013 Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Local History Societies, which will take place on May 24th, 25th & 26th 2013.

Sunday 19th June: From Prehistoric Knowth to the Battle – Coach Trip to the Boyne Valley with guide Dr Pat McCarthy. Details to be announced at a later date.

Sunday 10th July: Trip to the Hook Peninsula, including guided tour of Fethard Castle, Churchtown Church, and Hook Lighthouse, with guide Mr Ben Murtagh. Meet in Ballyhack, Co Wexford, at 2.30 pm.

Thursday 28th July: Visit Dunhill Castle and surrounding area, with guide Julian Walton. Meet 7.15 pm near the bridge over the Anne River, below the castle.
