Urbs Intacta Manet? The Development of Rugby and Soccer in Waterford 1877-1937 by Mr David Toms

On the way in... Michael Maher, Fergus Dillon, David Toms.

A great lecture indeed, and one didn't have to know much about sport to enjoy it. We were given a glimpse of society at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, in Waterford but also Cork and Dublin. Interestingly enough, the first game of rugby in Waterford was played between the bicycle club and the boat club!  and by the late 1920s many teams had been formed, such as teams from the Clyde Shipping Company, Mount Sion or Tycor...However there was a decline, in  favour of soccer, and at the end of the lecture more questions were raised from the floor with hypotheses on the subject.

A lot of stories to share after the lecture
